Kirkham Grammar School Junior and Inter boys and girls athletics teams competed in the regional finals of the Track & Field cup on Wednesday 14 June at Robin Park Wigan. It was an excellent achievement for all teams to make it to this stage and it was a great experience for our young athletes to match themselves up against the strongest schools in the North West of England.
On the day, stand out performers scoring highly for the junior team were Arron Pope (100m+Discus), Yande Nkonga (300+Discus), Tom Gut (300+Triple Jump) and Archie Dowdes (800+long jump). For the Inter team Archie Cooper (100+high jump), Oliver Barnett (300m+triple jump), Ben Preddy (1500), Jason Choi (80m hurdles) and Luca Sempers (80m hurdles +discus). The girls also performed all their field events in the morning racking up some excellent points. Hannah Mears threw particularly well in the Javelin with Gemma Eastham and Daniella Parzialle supporting in the Long Jump. The standings at the half way stage were open and therefore it was down to the track. Darcey Lonsdale was outstanding in the 200M as was Frankie Sarsfield, Freya Shaw and Lizzie Coulston in their events. The final results were out in what was a very close competition! Unfortunately, it wasn’t Kirkham’s day but the athletes experienced this top class event and thoroughly enjoyed the competition. A fabulous achievement and opportunity to perform at a prestigious National A Athletics Final. KGS athletes now look forward to the season finale with the Fylde Coast Championships next week.
