1st XI Cricket

The 1st XI were involved in another exciting game on Saturday at Stonyhurst College on a beautiful afternoon. Kirkham won the toss and decided to bat first on a firm yet green wicket which played really well throughout. Kirkham lost opening batsman Nathan Wolf for nought, adjudged LBW with only a single on the board and were in further trouble when Captain Nathan Wood was caught off the bowling of the cagey left arm spinner, Oyston. Kirkham, through Fred Hackett and Charlie Partington steadied the ship to take the score to 33 before Partington was clean bowled for a brisk 24. Hackett continued to play a watchful innings alongside Callum Doyle who got to 20 before being caught himself to leave Kirkham on 65-4. Will Gregory joined Hackett to take the score onto 95 before both batsmen departed on the same score, Hackett for 20 and Gregory for 14. Harrison Ross was the only other Kirkham player to score double figures(13) as the Kirkham innings petered away to be dismissed for a disappointing 111.

Stonyhurst lost a batsman early as they began their reply, Oyston looking calm as he knuckled down in pursuit of the relatively small Kirkham total. Stonyhurst looked comfortably as they gradually accumulated runs and managed to get to 51-2 without any alarms, Ntsika Smayile and Callum Doyle keeping the bowling tight. Stonyhurst lost two wicket to slump to 51-4 which gave Kirkham a glimmer of hope, however Oyston crept into the forties but as the score got to 74 Oyston was dismissed by Will Gregory to an excellent running, one handed catch off the bowling of Nathan Wolff. Partington continued to heap the pressure on the hosts as he bowled with control and he was well supported by Wolff and Gregory. Wolff then took two more wickets to leave Stonyhurst struggling on 76-6. Smayile then returned to the attack and in tandem with Wolff cleaned up the Stonyhurst tail which left him with match figures of 3 wickets for four runs from his allotted 8 overs. Wolff`s return was 5-18 from 8 overs which was a remarkable effort. Once again the Kirkham bowling and fielding produced the goods which led to an exciting finish, winning by 19 runs as the excellent hosts Stonyhurst were bowled out for 92, Gregory taking the last wicket.
