KGS U16 V RGS Newcastle - Saturday 6 November 2021
WON 10-7
On Saturday 6 November, an excited under 16 side made the three hour coach journey to RGS Newcastle. Based on recent form, the Newcastle side were going to be a difficult side to beat on home turf. The game kicked off with KGS receiving. The lads started off with plenty of energy and aggression. In a scoreless, although entertaining first half, Kirkham managed to hold out to a strong Newcastle side despite big collisions in the centres and in the pack. KGS started the second half off strongly scoring the first try of the day about five minutes in, with a good build-up of play. The ball was shifted from one side to the other creating space on the outside for the backs to exploit. Harry Reay drew in two defenders for Ollie Greenwood to make a lone break and offload to Tom Wilkinson: KGS- 5, RGS Newcastle- 0.
Unfortunately, KGS’ Callum Hill picked up a knock in a big tackle, resulting in him having to go off, leaving KGS with no fly half, and a man down. However, this didn’t stop the boys. After a break by Reay gaining metres for some strong carries, Seb Kelly managed to break through the line on the five metre line scoring the second try of the game: KGS- 10, RGS Newcastle- 0.
Newcastle then managed to batter their way over KGS’ try line for a converted try to bring them back into the match with just five minutes to play! KGS- 10, RGS Newcastle- 7.
The Kirkham lads managed to hold onto their lead playing a man down with a strong defensive performance in not so great conditions. The lads were a credit to their school after a long journey to play with no subs against an impressive RGS Newcastle side.
Tennis
The tennis season continued during the half term break after receiving the news that the Third and Fourth Year girls’ tennis team had qualified for the LTA regional finals off the back of the 2020/21 season. This involved a trip up to Sunderland Tennis Centre to compete against the best in the North.
Teams competing included St Peter's, York, Harrogate Grammar and Yarm School.
There was some outstanding tennis on display with KGS competing in both singles and doubles matches.
The team were victorious in all singles and doubles sets resulting in overall victory and a place in the LTA National Tennis finals to be held at Bolton Arena in December.
A huge achievement for all five squad members:
