On Friday 29 April, our J1 pupils visited the DEVA Roman Discovery Centre in Chester to further deepen their understanding of the Romans and the Roman Empire.
In the morning the pupils had a guided tour of the museum by our designated and very authentic Centurion, Pertinax. This involved an actual archaeological site with a 3D experience bringing the history of Roman Chester to life. The pupils learnt about Roman bath houses, handled some Roman artefacts and were able to ask lots of questions about what life would have been like as a Roman!
Following a packed lunch in the herb garden, the pupils then went on a soldier patrol, experiencing what it was like to be a part of the twentieth legion almost 2000 years ago, with Chester’s major archaeological attractions as a background. We caused quite a stir in the city centre with each pupil being given a Roman shield to take on patrol!
J1 also visited Chester’s amphitheatre and the Altar to Nemesis, however, the highlight of the day was engaging in battle formations using shields!
It was a truly special day and the pupils were a credit to the school.
