Title: KGS U16s Rugby V LRGS U16s
Kirkham Grammar School under 16s travelled to Lancaster Royal Grammar School to take part in the Lancashire cup semi-finals. KGS were rusty to start with having not played rugby in a number of weeks however, they soon gained momentum through captain Edwards, Blackburn and Carey. The first try came through a driving maul scored by Marsh converted by Wilsdon. Lancaster attacked back and through powerful running were able to score a try.
Kirkham showed some great defence against a strong running team, however managed to retain the ball to work their way up the field in attack. A penalty chance arose and Kirkham opted for the points in which Wilsdon was successful.
In the second half Kirkham applied pressure from the start with some powerful running again through Musson, Milligan and prior. However, Blackburn was the next over the white wash after shrugging a few players off. Lancaster kept building pressure and scored a few penalty kicks through Kirkham’s poor discipline. Sumner was the next over the try line after a great team effort. Again through ill-discipline, Lancaster were able to get in a position to be within a chance of winning with the converted try after kicking a penalty kick. Lancaster kept attacking but Kirkham defence kept them out for a sustained period of time. The under 16s will now progress to the Lancashire cup final after successfully winning 20-14 where they will play Scarisbrick Hall.
Well done to all the boys that participated and thank you to the parents who supported.

Title: KGS U16s Sevens Tournament at Sedbergh School
Kirkham Grammar Schools under 16s took part in the first sevens tournament of the year at Sedbergh School. They had two group games versus RGS Newcastle and Dollar Academy. The first game was tough getting back into the sevens mode. This was too late and the boys unfortunately lost 26-17 after a few mistakes led to tries.
In game two against Dollar Academy, again, the boys started slow leading to two early tries from dollar in the first half, in the second half the Kirkham boys got into the flow. However were only able to execute three tries versus dollars four tries. The game ended 24-19. There was a two hour break before the next game, which led some thinking time where the Kirkham boys had three more games to play.
Kirkham then played Ampleforth College, and despite Ampleforth’s best effort, Kirkham were resilient to the previous losses and put together a 47-0 win. The next game was up against Sedbergh B, again their seven's mojo was back and they produced a 50-5 win. The last game of the day was against Woodhouse Grove, playing on a bigger pitch with more confidence the boys produced a 40-12 win.
Despite the first two losses, all the boys involved showed tremendous effort and resilience to get back some confidence in the three games that they won. Notable mentions to Milligan, Gildea, Marsh and Sumner J, who produced and finished some great tries throughout the day. Other mentions to Taylor-Tomlinson, Sumner C and Camps Monjardino De Azevedo Soares for their efforts in their first sevens tournament.
Well done to all the boys involved. There is lots to look forward to in the coming weeks.
Thank you to the supporters who travelled along to support the boys throughout the day.
