Kirkham Grammar School welcomed Nick Taylor as its new Assistant Head (Pastoral) at the beginning of the 2025/2026 academic year. Bringing with him a wealth of international leadership experience and a passion for supporting young people to thrive, Mr Taylor joined KGS with a clear commitment to nurturing every pupil's potential, both inside and outside the classroom.
Originally from the south-east of England, Mr Taylor began his teaching career at Maidstone Grammar School before moving to Holland Park School in West London. He then spent more than a decade in the Middle East, initially teaching PE in Dubai before progressing to Assistant Head, followed by four years as Deputy Head at Doha College in Qatar.
Outside of school, sport has always played an important role in his life. As a father of three young boys, much of Mr Taylor's free time is spent supporting them at sporting fixtures and events, something that reflects his belief in the value of teamwork, resilience and participation.
After returning to the UK, Mr Taylor was looking for a school with a strong sense of identity, tradition and community.
He said: "Coming from a sporting background, I was already aware of KGS's impressive sporting heritage, but it was through the interview process that I came to appreciate its rich history and community spirit more fully. Working alongside Mrs O'Donoghue, I feel closely aligned with the school's values and ethos, and I have particularly enjoyed immersing myself in all aspects of school life."
Mr Taylor describes his educational philosophy as one that is optimistic and centred on the belief that every young person has the potential to succeed.
He is a strong advocate for a holistic education, where character development sits alongside academic achievement, helping pupils grow into confident, compassionate and capable adults. Respect, kindness and preparing young people for an ever-changing world are central to his approach, as is being a visible presence around the school.
"I try to be as visible as possible, whether that's at break and lunchtime, supporting school fixtures and events, or simply getting to know our pupils," he said.
Looking ahead, Mr Taylor's priority is to ensure every pupil feels supported, respected and able to learn from both their successes and their mistakes. He is keen to further develop a rewards and behaviour programme that celebrates the school's values and encourages positive choices.
He added: "Ultimately, success will be reflected in a safe, inclusive environment where pupils feel confident to take risks in their learning, knowing they are supported by staff who understand and value them as individuals."
